“The Perfect Smile” is in the eye of the beholder, or is it?

“The Perfect Smile” is in the eye of the beholder, or is it? | The Dentists Blog

The Perfect Smile

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is a popular saying, but is it right? Where does the perfect smile come from?

Who has “the perfect smile”?

If you google “people with the perfect smile’’ you will find Julia Roberts at the top of pretty much every single list.

I’m sure most objective people can agree that Julia Roberts is beautiful, but the perfect smile?

There are two ways to look at ‘the perfect smile’. From a cosmetic and from an emotional point of view.

The cosmetic side of things takes into account:

  • Teeth colour
  • Teeth gaps (missing teeth)
  • Teeth positioning
  • Jaw positioning
  • Gum colour and potential inflammation

But more importantly, at least in our opinion, is the emotional point of view.

Smiles are all about emotions. There are many types of smiles from the nervous smile to the full-on hearty happiness laughter. Who is to say one person smiling has a more beautiful smile than another? We believe the beauty of a smile lies in confidence.

What is confidence in a smile?

Imagine seeing someone walking down the road, not Julia Roberts or George Clooney, but an average person. They carry their body with a certain elaboration, and they are genuinely smiling. They look like they have just scored their dream job or asked the love of their life to marry them.

There is a certain confidence in a smile like that, you can feel that THEY feel confident in their smile, and we think that those are the smiles that are the most perfect!

Is the beauty of a smile in the eye of the beholder?

The above would suggest that the perfect smile isn’t about anybody but yourself. If you feel like you have a stunning smile, people can feel and see that too. The perfect smile isn’t about anybody else but yourself.

How can you feel more confident to smile?

Obviously, it’s not every day that you get engaged or land your dream job, so how can we carry around that sort of confidence more often?

There are many options you have to increase confidence, from implementing ways to live to increase your own confidence to cosmetic dental intervention.

It’s not vain to want cosmetic dentistry

When patients ask about cosmetic dentistry, they often quickly follow up their question with the statement “I’m not vain or anything”. I’m here to tell you, it’s not vain! Over the years I have had countless people come in to get cosmetic dental treatment done and it’s one of the dentistry areas we are very passionate about. One of the reasons I am so passionate about this is my grandma. As a little girl I used to go through our old family photos and realised that grandma would always cover her mouth or not smile, in every single photo. When I got older, I asked her why and she told me she was too embarrassed to show her teeth. At that moment I knew that cosmetic surgery is not vain but something important.

Is cosmetic dental treatment always the answer?

Cosmetic dental treatment is something that people might consider when they look at improving their smile from a cosmetic point of view. At times this can be as much about improving the overall look of a smile as helping someone feel more confident in themselves.

We can do a range of things and achieve incredible results with our treatments:

  • Teeth whitening

  • Teeth straightening with the use of traditional braces or Invisalign

  • Crowns

  • Veneers

  • Implants

  • Bridges

  • Fillings

Sometimes all it takes is one visit the The Dentists to feel like you know what your options are and to bring back your smile!
